Chapter 1 - The Wheel of Fate Begins to Turn

???: Hah!
???: Heh... The same stance, huh?
???: We really are brothers. However!
Ludger: Haa!
Ludger: Ah...!
???: "Judgment" is cruel.
???: So cruel that one cannot bear it.
Ludger: Ahh!
???: People are weak.
???: So weak, it will destroy the world.
???: Yes... this is our curse!
???: What's needed is a choice. A choice where life, the world, everything is at stake!
???: Can you do that? Answer me, Ludger Will Kresnik!

Ludger: Ah!
Ludger: ...
Lulu: Meow!
Ludger: Ahh!

Julius: You just barely made it, Ludger.
Julius: You understand this is the entrance exam for the Clanspia Company, right?

-L1: I know, Julius.
-R1: I know, brother.
(this choice affects what Ludger calls Julius for the rest of the game in the choices)

L1 Route:
Julius: You know, yet you still barely made it in time.
Julius: You always have had guts at the strangest times.
Ludger: ...
Julius: Hmm.

-L1: I had a dream where I killed you, Julius.
-R1: Nothing.

R1 Route:
Julius: ...I see.
Julius: Well then, let's begin the test.
Julius: The test will take place in this underground training area.
Julius: This training area extends under the entirety of Triglav. You can leave the city limits through
these tunnels.
Julius: But for today, if you leave this area you fail the test.
Julius: For a weapon, you can use these.
Julius: Heh... The same stance, huh?
Julius: We really are brothers.
Julius: The test involves actual combat.
Julius: Within the time limit, kill 5 monsters within this training area and then return here.
Julius: Any injuries sustained during the test are your own responsibility. Is that ok?
Julius: Well, the examiner is your brother after all. I'm not going to let you die.
Julius: No time for jokes, here they come!

==========================

Girl: Ahhhhhhh!
Ludger: ?!

-L1: Help her Julius!
-R1: (Save the girl yourself) (boss battle)

R1 Route: (after boss battle)
Girl: Thank you, you saved me...
Ludger: Wha!?
Julius: Surprise attacks are a common tactic in actual combat.
Julius: You didn't even question the fact that a girl suddenly appeared out of nowhere?
Julius: This test was designed to test your judgment ability.
Julius: Ludger Will Kresnik.
Julius: You have failed.
Ludger: ...

Elle's Father: Elle, wait!
Elle: !!
Elle's Father: Ah!
Soldier: They went below, don't let them escape!
Elle: Papa's watch...
Elle's Father: Elle, you can read clocks now right?
Elle's Father: You have to board the train that leaves Triglav Central Station at 10 o' clock.
Elle's Father: Then, you must get to the Land of Canaan.
Elle: The Land of Canaan?
Elle's Father: It's a place that makes all your dreams come true.
Elle's Father: It's a place where you and I can live in peace and happiness.
Elle: A place that makes all your dreams come true...
Elle's Father: No matter how hard it is, or how scary, you must be brave and keep going.
Elle: Alright, I promise.
Elle's Father: Get to the boat.
Elle's Father: Go! To the Land of Canaan!
Soldier: Victor!
Elle: Papa?
Elle's Father: Papa will come too, for sure.
Elle: Papa...!
Elle: Papaaaa!
Soldier: Damn, she got away.
Soldier: The "key" should be with this guy, there should be no problem.
Soldier: Wh... what is this?

Julius: Oi, Ludger, how long are you going to sleep?
Julius: You've got a lot of guts, considering it's your first day on the job.
Julius: Shall I give you some advice, as your big brother?

-L1: Please, Julius. (Julius +)
-R1: No, it's fine.

L1 Route:
Julius: Don't be so formal, it's weird.
Julius: You finally decided on being a chef for your career. Do your best.
Ludger: Heh!
Julius: Don't laugh!
Julius: Since it's your cooking, I know you'll do just fine at the station cafeteria.
Julius: As someone who eats your cooking everyday, I can assure you.
Lulu: Meow!
Julius: Lulu's says she's hungry too. What do you say we eat?
Julius: Chef, what's on this morning's menu?

-L1: Tomato omelette (Julius +)
-R1: Mabo curry

L1 Route:
Julius: You think you can just feed me tomatoes and get me off your back, eh?
Julius: Well you're not wrong.
Julius: Alright, special canned food for Lulu...
Julius: Or maybe not. You'll have to deal with dry food, I'm afraid. You've gotten fat recently.
Lulu: Meow.

Reporter: Moving on to the next piece of news.
Reporter: The Askord Natural Factory, a joint investment of the government and the Clanspia Company, begins operations starting today.*
Reporter: Askord is Elenpios's largest scale natural resources production factory.
Reporter: There are great expectations from all over Elenpios for the operation to stabilize the food supply.
Reporter: Today at 10 o' clock, a special commemoration train will depart from Triglav Central Station.
Reporter: Many important people are expected to attend the commemoration ceremony, including the president of Clanspia Company, Bisley-san.
Julius: A special train... it's departing from the station you work at, isn't it?
Ludger: Yes.
Julius: Oh by the way, is there anything you want?
Julius: You know, as a congratulatory present for getting a job.

-L1: I want one of your watches, Julius.
-R1: I don't want anything really.

L1 Route:
Julius: One of these old things?
Julius: If it's a watch you want, I'll buy you a nice new wristwatch.
Julius: Or maybe a necktie might be good.
Julius: You'll be serving many customers at the station. Your appearance is important.
Julius: Oh, I have to go.
Julius: !?
Ludger: ?
Julius: Well, I'm off.
Julius: You better hurry too. It doesn't look good for a station employee to be late.

*I have no idea what "natural factory" means, but that's what it says. Some sort of energy plant?

==========================

Jude: You were the one who said you wanted to collect information for your article, Leia. You even
begged Baran-san for a ticket.
Jude: You want me to gather information instead? I don't even know which one is the special train.
Jude: Wha?!
Jude: Sigh, what should I do...

-L1: Shall I show you the train? I'm headed to the station as well. (Jude +)
-R1: If you're looking for the special train, just go to the station and you'll find it.

L1 Route:
Jude: Really, you will? Thank you!
Jude: You're really helping me out. My friend stood me up.

Elle: The 10 o' clock train... the 10 o' clock train...
Elle: !?
Elle: Hey, do you know the place where there are lots of big trains?
Elle: It's called Triglav Central Station.
Elle: Sigh, there's no way this cat understands me.
Elle: Busi...ness...district...
Elle: Ah! It says "station"!
Elle: Wait up! Are you going to the train station too?

==========================

Ludger: Look there.
Jude: So that's the special train.
Man: So that's it.
Secretary: Yes.
Secretary: It's from Vice Division Manager Redau. "There's been some suspicious activity in Crown. Be on the lookout."
Man: If they're laying a trap, then this ought to be amusing.
Station Worker: We've been waiting for you Bisley-sama. The special train is expected to depart on schedule.
Jude: Thank you. Thanks to you I'm able to board the train in time.

==========================

Station Worker: I apologize, I am quite busy at the moment. If you are looking for a lost child, please inquire at the station office.
Station Worker: Excuse me, could you come with me to the station office.
Station Worker: This little girl is saying you did strange things to her.
Ludger: !?
Elle: (mouthing words silently) I'm sorry.
Station Worker: Wait, are you trying to run away!

-L1: (Resist the worker)
-R1: I didn't do anything, that kid lied!

R1 Route:
Station Worker: What do you expect to gain by saying that? If you make a fuss, your problems just get bigger.
Woman: What happened?
Man: They say that guy molested a child.
Ludger: Gr...!
Ludger: !

-L1: (Board the train)
-R1: (Run away)

(You board it either way.)

Elle: Pa...pa...
Elle: Uhh...uh....

-L1: (Stand and fight) (Elle +)
-R1: (Surrender)

L1 Route:
Ludger: Ah!
Terrorist: Is he an agent?
Terrorist: It's over!
Elle: Use these!

(battle)

Elle: I'm fine... just fine.
Elle: Kyaa!
Jude: Huh?
Bisley: Impressive, Dr. Mathis. That was Liese Maxia-style martial arts, right? That's something I'd like to teach my company's guards.
Bisley: However, they won't be able to learn spirit artes like those of you from Liese Maxia.
Jude: It's a good thing we are were in the same car.
Bisley: This guy is quite strong as well.
Bisley: I am a representative of the Clanspia Company, Bisley Karcsi Bakur.

-L1 Route: (Shake hands and introduce yourself) (Bisley +)
-R1 Route: (Do not shake hands and remain silent)

L1 Route:
Bisley: Ludger Will Kresnik... are you related to Julius?
Jude: Kresnik!
Secretary: He is in our company's database. Ludger-sama is Division Manager Julius's younger brother.
Secretary: ...Although, it seems they have different mothers.
Bisley: Is that so? Well then, any relative of Julius's is like part of my own family.
Ludger: ...
Elle: Uwa!
Bisley: It seems Ark Noah has begun.
Jude: Ark Noah!
Secretary: They are a terrorist group that opposes peace between Liese Maxia and Elenpios.
Bisley: They are targeting my company since we are supporting peaceful cooperation with Liese Maxia.
Bisley: They're probably planning to crash this train into Askord.
Elle: That's terrible!

-L1: I'll stop the train! (Elle +)
-R1: If I stop the train, will you hire me...? (Bisley +)

L1 Route:
Elle: You can really do that? For sure? How?
Jude: If we can take control of the front control car then...
Bisley: You're determined? ...This will be interesting.
Jude: I'll go too.
Jude: It's my responsibility too.
Bisley: As expected of you.
Jude: My name is Jude Mathis. Nice to meet you, Ludger.
Jude: Let's hurry!

==========================

Jude: Ludger, do you not have an arrowsal orb by chance?
Ludger: ...
Jude: I have a spare with me. Take it.
Jude: You probably know this already, but arrowsal orbs are a replacement for the outdated lilial orbs.
Jude: With this, you can link in battle. Linking is...
Jude: Looks like we have no choice but to try it out in real combat.

==========================

Jude: Oh right. I should explain how the growth function works with arrowsal orbs.
Jude: It's a similar power to that which existed in the lilial orbs, but it's actually quite different.
Ludger: ?
Jude: The large amount of mana that was released when the Shell was destroyed caused the lilial orbs to stop functioning.
Jude: Now, a mana absorbing "Gin" device called an absorber can supply elemental energies.
Jude: This led to the revival of linking and growth abilities, resulting in the arrowsal orb.
Jude: Sorry, that was a little long-winded. Anyhow, why don't you try using it?

==========================

Secretary: Shall I call for the alternate timeline counter-measure squad?
Bisley: Yes. It will be an excellent opportunity to test their abilities.
Elle: Papa's watch is gone!
Bisley: Young miss, moving about is dangerous.
Elle: I don't care if it's dangerous, that watch is precious to me!
Elle: It's my charm that will take me to the Land of Canaan!
Bisley: Well, this certainly is getting interesting.

==========================

Jude: Just up there is the operator's room I think.
Jude: I'll go first. Can I count on you to back me up, Ludger?
Jude: Don't worry, I'm used to this sort of thing.
Jude: Though my real profession is a medical researcher.

==========================

Jude: This is!?
Julius: Ludger, why are you here...?

-L1: Julius, why are YOU here!?
-R1: What... was that just now?

L1 Route:
Julius: This is work...
Bisley: Haha, I have such a wonderful subordinate.
Bisley: Just as expected of Crown Agent Julius. You work quick.
Julius: Please stop with the jokes, president.
Bisley: To think that you had such an excellent younger brother.
Bisley: You certainly have protected him well. Such a kind older brother.
Julius: ...Of course!
Bisley: Are you sure you want to do this in front of your younger brother?
Julius: Gr...
Elle: That watch!
Elle: Wha!?
Julius: !
Bisley: !
Jude: Look out!

-L1: (Protect Elle) (Elle +)
-R1: (Protect Bisley) (Bisley +)

L1 Route:
Elle: A..ah...
Terrorist: We won't allow it! We won't allow there to be peace with Liese Maxia!
Julius: No...!
Elle: Wha...what?
Ludger: Gahhhhhh...!
Jude: What was that just now...?
Jude: Umm...
Elle: I'm Elle.
Elle: Elle Mel Mata.
Jude: There's nothing to worry about, Elle.
Elle: There is too something to worry about!
Elle: That person and the watch both became weird.
Ludger: ...
Jude: I seem to attract strange and mysterious things. Things like the four great spirits and the master
of all the spirits.
Elle: They're here again!
Nova: President Verand, this way.
Verand: Well done, Nova-kun. All the guards should look up to.
Jude: Those words.
Nova: Ludger! What are you doing here?
Elle: Your friend?
Nova: Classmates.

-L1: Anyway, we have to stop this train.
-R1: Let's look for Julius. (Julius +)

R1 Route:
Elle: Search? For the guy in glasses from before?
Jude: He seems to know what's going on.
Elle: Elle is coming too.
Jude: No, it's too dangerous.
Elle: Elle has to go to the Land of Canaan on this train no matter what.
Jude: The Land of Canaan? From the legend?
Elle: You know of it? Do you know where it is?
Jude: Well, I've only read about it in ancient texts...
Elle: Ancient texts, huh....
Jude: Alright, you can come with us, but if a fight breaks out...
Elle: I'm good at hiding!

==========================

Julius: Don't come any closer!
Julius: Just leave everything to me...

-L1: Tell me what's going on!
-R1: ...Alright.

L1 Route:
Julius: You don't need to know.
Julius: Didn't I tell...
Ludger: !?
Julius: ...You don't need to know!?
Jude: Ludger!
Jude: Ugh!

(boss battle)

Nova: Ah... What is going on?
Verand: This guy...
Verand: ...He killed my employees!
Verand: Hey! Hurry up and kill him already!

-L1: I can't kill Julius! (Julius +)
-R1: (Kill Julius)

L1 Route:
Verand: You're going to cover for this monster!?
Julius: You are... too kind...
Julius: That's why...!
Nova: ...!*
Elle: Ah...Ahh...
Julius: I told you not to come closer.
Elle: Yaaaaa!!!
Jude: It won't stop! The breaks are broken!
Elle: What's happening?
All: Ahhhhhh!!!

*Wow they really turned up the violence in this Tales game lol.

==========================

Please read the disclaimer below.

Since the other ToX2 translation got dropped I decided try to do one myself. I know this game will probably be localized within a few years, but as I go through this game I have to translate a lot of it anyway, since I'm only semi-fluent. I figured I might as well just write it down for my own use in future playthroughs, so I can practice translating, and for others who can't read Japanese.

Disclaimer
A few disclaimers first. This is not an official translation, it is a fan translation. It will have spoilers from Tales of Xillia 1. I know it's frustrating when translation projects are dropped, I will do my best to finish, but I cannot promise speed. I'm working full time and going to school full time so I have a lot of commitments. I do love Tales though and I love ToX2 so far, so I will finish the game and hopefully this translation eventually.

Being only semi-fluent in Japanese, I do make mistakes. Sometimes I will note when I'm confused about a line, but there may be some lines translated completely wrong and I don't realize it. If you know Japanese and see something wrong, please tell me. Typo corrections are welcome as well. I'm sorry in advance if any of my translation is confusing. I'm trying my best to make it as natural as possible while still capturing all the nuances of the original script (since this is intended to be a direct translation and not a localization).

What I'm translating
This translation will not have the official English spellings (since most haven't been released yet, I will use the official Japanese spellings where they exist), and it will only be a translation of the main story cutscenes, character episodes, and skits (possibly not all of them). No menus, no in-game explanations, no random unvoiced sidequests unless it's an important one.

What about the choice system?
About the many many many choices that affect the cutscenes in this game, I'm only translating the choices I pick. Going back through every scene twice is far too much work for a couple lines, sorry. Really, you won't miss much. Usually it only affects 1-3 unimportant lines. I usually pick the best choice anyway (more often than not there IS a best choice) when one option is obviously better and increases a character's affection.

I can't speak any Japanese, should I play this game?
If you are completely incapable of reading any Japanese, unfortunately I suggest you wait until the English release. If you're familiar at least with a little bit (katakana at least) and are familiar with Tales games in general, you can get by. I played Japanese Tales games when I only knew katakana (which helps for reading arte names and place/people's names). Knowledge of other Tales games helps you pick up on the battle system easier (since you won't be able to read the tutorials). This translation is not intended to be a walkthrough. There are a few English resources at the bottom of this post, be sure to check them out.

Pride and Prejudice

I am certain that what I'm about to say has been said many times in the past by people more highly capable of analyzing this book and more familiar with Austen's works and the time period in which they were written. However, I still want to state my reactions to this novel, although I do not intend to analyze it overly much.

*Spoilers ahead!*

In all my 23 years, somehow I never came to learn anything about the story of Pride and Prejudice. The most I can say is simply that I knew that there was a character named Darcy and that it was set in England. I did not even know it was a romance. I think in the end it was for the best though, that I first read this book as an adult, and not in high school. I do not believe I would have been capable of truly appreciating and understanding it in high school.

My recent obsession with classical movies some months ago led me to randomly watch a movie on TCM called "Random Harvest" (haha unintentional pun). The movie starred Ronald Colman and Greer Garson, and I must say that I LOVE this movie. Partly for its wonderfully touching story and partly for the brilliant actors who play the leading man and leading lady. Greer Garson's acting (and beautiful British accent haha) I especially fell in love with. I tell this anecdote because Greer Garson also happens to star in the 1940 production of Pride and Prejudice. Ever since learning she starred in this movie, for this reason alone I wanted to see it, and finally a few weeks ago TCM aired it. Much to my surprise I loved the story from beginning to end! The very next day I bought the book, determined to read it.

Honestly I expected the book to be hard to read and somewhat dull, not in the story, but in the writing style. Still I was determined to read it, fueled by my love of the movie. I did progress a little slowly at first, for about a week or two after watching the 1940 version, until my friend brought over the 2005 movie version, which, again to my surprise, I found that I loved even more than the 1940 version. Although it seems many people begrudge the 2005 movie because it did not closely enough follow the book and because it took liberties in the way it set up its scenes (meaning it showed Elizabeth doing what would have been highly improper in the real time period, such as talking alone with Wickham or walking about in her night dress). However, looking at the movie as it is, accepting that it is not historically accurate in many ways, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I do not think the liberties it took with the story are terrible at all, as they are easily overlooked, and to many modern viewers the impropriety of certain scenes may not even be noticed. Also, I should add that Matthew MacFadyen is by far by favorite Darcy (his acting in the first proposal scene is outstanding!), and I love Keira Knightley as Elizabeth as well.

Watching the 2005 version inspired me to pick up the novel again, and I quickly became hooked. Austen's writing style is wonderful, and not so difficult to comprehend as I once feared. Although I do fail to completely grasp the meaning of a few sentences here and there, her paragraphs on the thoughts of her characters are expertly done. Particularly in the latter half of the book as the narrator shows us how Elizabeth's feelings change towards Darcy. Many have said it before, and I will say it again, Austen truly understands human nature, as is evident in her characters. Not only that, she has managed to write a timeless story, which is more than can be said for many other "classics" that I read in school.

I went from knowing nothing of Pride and Prejudice to absolutely loving everything about it, and it has risen to one of my favorite books of all time. I do intend to soon watch the BBC production, which I understand is far closer to the novel (although I still prefer 2005 movie actors to the BBC actors, not that they aren't good from the clips I have seen, I just like the 2005 actors better). I also plan to soon read Austen's other novels, although they are not as famous as Pride and Prejudice, I hope that I will still enjoy them.

Art Blog #5

1. Looking at my midterm and final, I would say my biggest accomplishment is learning to successfully work with stock images. I'd never really done any pieces with stock images before. It sure is annoying finding good stock images. I learned a lot about how to work with stock images and how to piece them together to look like one picture. The final was actually easier than the midterm because I used less stock images. I thought it would be hard to turn a day picture into night, but it wasn't so bad. I like using lighting and thinking about how the light hits the things around it. Both pieces turned out better than I expected and I'm really happy with them.

2. Umm, this question is sort of similar to the first question. I would say working with stock images was the most challenging thing I did, and my biggest accomplishment. I didn't really "master" it though. Putting them together in the piece is not the hard part, finding pictures that can fit together and go along with your vision is the hard part. But good stock images are hard to find on google. Other than that nothing was really "difficult." I'll just talk about my other projects too, and what was sorta of hard when making them, cause otherwise I'll just end up talking about the midterm and final the whole time.

Text is definitely annoying to work with. On the Harry Potter magazine it took me forever to get the text to be readable and stand out, since the background was kinda busy. The second quiz, the colored image of Lucille Ball, wasn't really that hard. I'd actually never colorized an image before then, but I've known how to do it for a long time. I just sort of figured you use color blending mode. I like colorizing though, it's fun. On the third quiz, the fixed image of a mall, I actually had to extend part of the purse rack in the upper left because it got ripped off a little bit. I had to use the clone stamp on what was originally there. It was really annoying, but it looks ok I think. As for the fourth quiz, the greaseheart poster, this is actually my least favorite of all the pieces. I didn't really have a good idea for it other than the quote. It certainly doesn't compare to the "Dirty Dancing with Wolves" poster.

3. I'm just gonna talk about the midterm and final again here. I'm not really sure what the question is asking. I would say my midterm and final are the perfect examples of creating meaning out of random images. I mean I took various stock images and pieced them together to form a picture. I'm not sure how to compare and contrast that. Not sure what "not being just a showcase of technique" means either. I would say my pieces aren't just showcasing techniques, cause I use a lot of random techniques in each piece. None of them focus on one technique except the mall picture, since I used the clone stamp almost exclusively there.

Art Blog #4

Well I haven't exactly decided what I want to do for my final project yet, but I think I'm going to take a stock picture of either a valley or old Japanese town and make it into a night scene. I was browsing through photoshop tutorials on psd.tutsplus.com and came across this tutorial, which gave me the idea. I think I'm going to continue my themes from the midterm and use solitude and fantasy as my big idea. I either want to make a scene like the tutorial and add a geisha and make a very serene night scene, or make a night time valley scene and add a castle and stuff. I want to add lots of colors to make it more fantasy like. Sort of like this image. I would say that image is part of my inspiration. I was also inspired by that new CG disney castle opening. I really like the lighting and the scene they created with the train and the lights from towns in the distance. I'm considering adding fireworks to my scene and just going with a fantasy big idea. I'll probably just play around with my final piece and see what works like usual.

I'm not sure if I answered all the questions for this blog or not. I'll just list them out.

1a. My big idea will be fantasy (maybe solitude/imagination?). A lot of the times I sort of decide along the way after I see what sort of scene works out well. With the midterm I had no idea what the scene would look like until I actually started piecing the mountains together. When a scene starts working out I like to come up with a story in my head of what it's about and my big idea sort of comes through then. Although we're supposed to know what it is now, so I'm going to go with fantasy for the moment.

1b. This seem more like a retrospective question... I dunno how it's going to communicate my meaning exactly until it comes together a bit. I need more time to play around before I can explain that sort of stuff. What I have in my head now is to do a night scene like the tut, but I want to add lots of pretty colors like the "night sky" image I posted above. Maybe I'll add two moons to the sky. Fantasy scenes always have two moons for some reason. Fireworks would be cool too cause they are lots of pretty colors.

1c. Uhhh... it will be used for my enjoyment I guess? Maybe I could make it into a wallpaper? I really just want to try my hand at doing something different than I'm used to in photoshop.

2. My influences/inspirations for this piece: the photoshop tutorial I posted earlier, the "night sky" image on deviantart, and the cg disney opening. Plus Edward Hopper if I decide to include some sort of solitary mood.

3. One new technique that I will use? Um well, they used a vanishing point filter in the tut, and I've never used that before, so maybe I'll use that? I haven't made very many scenery pictures using stock imagery other than my midterm so that's new.

Art Blog #3

I feel like I have to mention Edward Hopper when talking about artists that influence my work. So I'm going to talk about him first.

I like the feeling of simplicity and solitude that Hopper's paintings evoke. In his paintings, the subject is usually by themselves or simply not interacting with the people around them. The subjects in his paintings frequently have their back turned to the viewer as well, making it seem like the subject is even further detached from the world. I always felt his paintings were very sad to look at, but in a good way, like there's some sort of underlying peace.

I like Edward Hopper's paintings because I think my big idea is the same as his: solitude. I frequently have only one subject in my paintings as well, usually with their back turned. I included two examples of my work that I think are somewhat influenced by Hopper. I always liked Hopper's style as well. The colors and shapes are really simple, but he's able to invoke this sort of sad mood with his paintings that I always liked and wanted to emulate.

I'm not sure what I want to do for my final project yet, but I already incorporated my own big idea of solitude in my midterm. There's only one person in it, with their back turned to the viewer. I didn't really intentionally include my big idea in the midterm. Those kind of Edward Hopper-like sad scenes are just what I usually feel inspired to create. I'm sure my personal big idea will come through in my final project as well.

I think what I can learn from Hopper is to more intentionally incorporate my big idea into my art. I haven't really put much thought into it before now, and my big idea usually just comes out naturally (or accidentally?). Although maybe it's a good thing that it comes out naturally without thought...

As for another artist that inspires me, I would have to say it's Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki is a Japanese animator who founded an animation studio called Studio Ghibli.

Miyazaki has a lot of big ideas in my opinion. The two biggest ones being humanity's relationship with nature, and the blurring of the line between good and evil. His movies frequently pit humans against nature, and he does not always define who the "villain" is. This is especially true is his movie Princess Mononoke. When there is a more, they usually have redeeming qualities, or have their own good reasons for doing what they're doing, even though they're pitted against the main character. I've always preferred this type of "villain" instead of the typical Disney villain that just wants to take over the world.

Miyazaki's work also usually has that tinge of sadness that I find appealing in Hopper's work, as well as a underlying feeling of hope. I like mixing sadness and hope in my art. I'm not sure if it comes off like that to other people, but it does to me at least.

I always admired animators and their ability to tell a story with their art. I would say I am influenced by Miyazaki in that I try my best to tell stories with my artwork too, even though it's just a static image and not animation. Even if it doesn't come through to others very well, I at least usually have a story in mind behind the image when I create art. Same goes for my midterm, but I'll explain that later in my artist's statement.

Again I'm still not really sure what my final project is going to be, but I will most likely have a backstory in my mind when I create it. I'd like to learn how to incorporate stories into my art. Miyazaki's stories are always deep, emotional, and thought-provoking. I would say that is the kind of story I have always wished to incorporate into my art. Of course, I'd say that everyone wishes their work to be thought provoking. If a viewer doesn't think at all about the meaning behind your art that would be sorta sad.

I can't really show Miyazaki's work as easily as I can Hopper's, since Miyazaki's work is all movies and copyrighted and such. But I included some movie trailers from youtube in the links below.
